This is the view of the mountains, olive trees and
fields behind our resort in Episkopi, Crete. |
A larger town 30 minutes away, Rethymno has fresh
vegetables for sale. |
The resort and "taverna" we stayed at for
6 days.
If you want a great place to stay while on Crete...
 |

A busy street in Rethymno, with shops on all sides. |
|

A fresh fish market in Rethymno. |

Some bakeries still bake using the old charcoal ovens. |
|

Loukoumedes on the left.....a fried pastry with honey
and nuts on top.
Saligkaria (snails) on the right...these were actually
very good! |

We were stopped a few times in a couple of the small
towns with herds of sheep blocking the roads. |

Driving in Crete was an adventure! Driving regulations
are more of a "guideline" rather than laws. Passing
cars here is actually pretty easy, you do not have to wait for
a passing lane, you can pass on double lines, and the other cars
just move to the sides of the road so you can get through! We
also learned that stop signs mean....if it is clear gun it or
you will get run over. |
These are stacks of pork on a spit. There are restaurants
or "tavernas" are all over Greece with these. They
carve off pieces of meat and put them into a Gyro with onions,
tomatoes, tsaziki (cucumber-yogurt sauce) and french fries. |

Kavalos Lake near Episkopi is a natural lake formed
from faulting that allows underground springs to come to the
surface. |
