SANTORINI

Part of the Cyclades Islands

This volcano erupted in 1450 BC, leaving a large crater or caldera. This eruption is thought to be responsible for wiping out the Minoan people both on Santorini and Crete. The island today is a crescent shape with two smaller islands in the middle. Houses have been built on the cliffs overlooking the caldera.

A look at the port area from the top of the island.

The houses are built on cliffs that can be accessed by stairs only.

An overlook from the north part of the island, from the town Oia.

Santorini has many churches for such a small island.

The round tops to some of the buildings is common in the Cyclades Islands.

This is a large resort on the island cliff, with an indoor/outdoor pool.

There are three ways to get from the top cliff town of Fira, down to the port.

  • Donkey
  • 600 steps straight down
  • Cable car

Guess which one we took?
